Once you submit your application and have made the payment of the application fee, you should receive a confirmation email that you have sent your application, with your eTA reference number. Once you have that number, you are able to check the status of your eTA application at any time, simply by visiting the website and using the unique reference.

So make sure that you keep the number somewhere that you can easily find it, you may want to print a copy of the email to keep as a record. You should receive email notification of eTA approval (or decline) but you can also check through the online application status checker.
